往 [wǎng] indicates the direction in which someone or something moves, looks, or is directed. 
往 [wǎng] indica la dirección hacia la que alguien o algo se mueve, mira o se dirige.

    往 + place/direction + verb
    往 + lugar/dirección + verbo

It is used mainly with verbs such as 走 (walk), 跑 (run), 看 (look), and 放 (put).

往 expresses direction, not simply a destination:
往 expresa dirección, no simplemente destino:

我去学校。 → I go to school. (去 = destination)

Think of 往 as an arrow: → “toward / in the direction of.”
