Asking Questions

Question words are another way to ask questions in Chinese. They are simple to use and don’t change the sentence structure at all.

Structure

You simply replace the element you want to ask about by the right question word and you’ve formed a question!

Example

那 [nà],那儿 [nàr],哪 [nǎ],哪儿 [nǎr]

 [nà] that, then, so / ese/a, en ese caso, tan
个人是我爸爸。
ge rén shì wǒ bàba.
That person is my dad.

There are different ways to express “ can “ in Chinese, depending on what type of ability you’re talking about. Two verbs, in particular, are used to express "being able" are  and . Let's see what the difference between 会 and 能 is!

The main use for  is to bounce back questions at someone.

In this case, its use is very similar to the “and you?” in English, when you’re directly returning the question to someone. More generally,  is also very close to "how about" or "what about" in English. You'll see, it's a handy little bugger.
